Nap Timer with Music

The nap timer on this site starts music at a whisper, fades it in gently, fades it out just before the end and wakes you with a soft, rising chime. It keeps your screen on while you nap, and runs in the page, with nothing to install.

20 minute napMusic fades in, fades out, a soft chime wakes you.

How to use it

  1. Choose a length: 10, 20, 30 or 90 minutes.
  2. Press Start nap. Music starts at low volume and fades up over about 20 seconds.
  3. Close your eyes. The screen can stay on, dimmed.
  4. In the last 10 seconds the music fades out. Then a soft chime plays and rises a little each time, up to six times.
  5. Press I’m awake, or Snooze 5 minutes.

Alarm safety

This timer is a gentle wake-up, not a safety alarm. Please:

  • Set a backup alarm on your phone or watch, a few minutes after the nap ends.
  • Check the volume with the “Test the chime” button before you lie down. Make sure your phone is not on silent. On an iPhone, check the silent switch.
  • Keep this tab open. Closing it or turning the screen off may stop the sound on some phones.
  • Never rely on it for a flight, a train, medicine, or a pick-up.

What “keep the screen on” means

While a nap is running, the page asks your device not to turn the screen off (the Screen Wake Lock feature, in most modern browsers). If your browser does not support it, the page tells you, and you can keep the screen on in your device settings.

Choosing music

For each length there is matching music, fitted to the time: 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes and 90 minutes. Or pick a playlist by moment, like power nap or travel.

Questions

Does the nap timer keep working if I switch tabs?

The countdown uses the real clock, so it stays accurate. Keep the tab open and the music playing, because some browsers pause tabs that are in the background.

Can I use my own alarm sound?

No. The chime is generated in your browser, with no file, and it is the same for everyone. Set a phone alarm if you want a specific sound.

Is the timer free?

Yes. The timer and the music are free, with no sign-up. The music is by Purrple Cat, licensed under CC BY 4.0.

General information, not medical advice. If you are very tired all the time, or nap a lot and still feel awful, talk to a doctor. The nap timer is a gentle wake-up, not a safety alarm: set a backup alarm.
