The short answer

How long should a nap be?

For most people, 10 to 20 minutes. It is short enough to avoid deep sleep, so you wake up clear. Go to 30 minutes when you are very tired, and choose 90 minutes to sleep a full cycle. Late-afternoon naps can make night sleep harder, so try to finish by mid-afternoon.

How the timer works

Fade in, fade out, a soft chime

  1. 1

    Music fades in

Press start and the music rises from silence over about 20 seconds, so there is no jolt as you settle.

  2. 2

    Fade out, then a chime

In the last 10 seconds the music fades away. A soft three-note chime plays, and rises a little each time, up to six times.

  3. 3

    Screen stays on

While you nap, the page asks your device to keep the screen awake, so the countdown and the sound are not cut off.

Alarm safety

This is a gentle wake-up, not a safety alarm. Set a backup alarm on your phone, check your volume with the test button, keep this tab open and the phone off silent. Do not rely on it for a flight, a train, medicine or a pick-up. How the nap timer works.

Doze ratings

Every song has a doze rating, 1 to 5 z’s

We measured each song’s average loudness, beat density, brightness, steadiness and tempo, then rated how easily it lets you drift off. The most awake 12% of songs were left out. Sort the library by doze to pick your own.

  1. Light LiftThe liveliest end of the nap library: a gentle bounce and a warm tone. Good for a ten minute reset, or a nap where you do not want to sink too far.
  2. Easy DriftRelaxed songs with a soft pulse. They let your mind wander without pulling you under.
  3. Soft DozeThe middle of the library: soft, settled and a little dreamy. The best all-round nap music.
  4. Deep DozeSlow, quiet and spacious. The beat almost disappears. Good for a nap you want to fall into fast.
  5. Full FadeThe stillest songs on the site: no real beat, the softest volume and long floating pads. For a deep nap, a long nap, or a nap that follows a bad night.

Questions

Nap music, answered

What is the best music for a nap?

Slow, quiet, steady instrumental music with no lyrics and no sudden changes. This site has 202 songs, each rated 1 to 5 for how easily it lets you drift off, plus music fitted to 10, 20, 30 and 90 minute naps.

How does the nap timer work?

Choose 10, 20, 30 or 90 minutes and press Start nap. The music fades in over about 20 seconds, keeps playing, and fades out in the last 10 seconds. Then a soft chime plays and gets a little louder each time until you press I’m awake. Your screen stays on while the nap runs, if your browser supports it.

How long should a power nap be?

Ten to twenty minutes for most people. Thirty minutes is the upper limit before you risk waking groggy. For a full sleep cycle, use 90 minutes.

Is the nap timer a safe alarm?

It is a gentle wake-up, not a safety alarm. Set a backup alarm on your phone, check your volume with the Test the chime button, and keep this tab open. Do not rely on it for a flight, a train, medicine or a pick-up.

Is this nap music free?

Yes. Every playlist streams free with no sign-up and no ads, and every track has a free MP3 download. The music is by Purrple Cat and licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0).

Are these nap songs instrumental?

Yes, all of them. There are no lyrics, so they are easy to rest to, and the music has no sudden loud parts.

How are the doze ratings worked out?

Each song’s audio is analysed for average loudness, how dense the beat is, how bright the tone is, how much the volume changes and its tempo. Quieter, sparser, warmer, steadier songs score higher. The score is shown as one to five z’s.

Does the music keep playing when I change page?

Yes. The player and the nap timer keep going while you move around the site, so you can read a guide while the timer runs.

Will my videos get Content ID claims?

No. The music is not registered with Content ID, so videos, streams and VODs will not be claimed for it.

Can I upload the music to Spotify or Apple Music?

No. Please don’t upload the music to music streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer or Tidal, and no remixes, samples or covers of it there either, because that triggers false Content ID claims.
