How to Wake Up From a Nap Without Feeling Groggy

That heavy, foggy feeling after a nap is called sleep inertia. You can avoid most of it by keeping the nap short, waking gently and getting some light and movement straight away.

20 minute napMusic fades in, fades out, a soft chime wakes you.

Why do some naps leave you groggy?

If you fall into deep sleep and are then woken, your brain takes a while to catch up. It usually passes in a few minutes to half an hour. Longer naps, naps when you are very sleep-deprived, and naps at an odd time of day make it more likely.

How to wake up well

  1. Keep it short. Ten to twenty minutes avoids deep sleep for most people.
  2. Wake gently. A loud buzzer makes it worse. Use a soft, rising chime. That is what this site’s timer does.
  3. Let the music fade first. The music fades out just before the chime so you hear a clear, calm signal.
  4. Get light. Open the curtains or step outside.
  5. Move. Stretch, walk to the kitchen, drink some water.
  6. Give it five minutes. Do not start something difficult straight away.

What about coffee?

Some people drink a coffee just before a 20 minute nap, because caffeine takes a little while to start working. Others find it keeps them awake. Try it on a day you do not need to be sharp.

If you are always groggy

Try a shorter nap. If every nap leaves you foggy, or you feel exhausted all day, talk to a doctor.

Questions

How long does sleep inertia last after a nap?

Usually a few minutes, sometimes up to half an hour. Short naps and gentle waking shorten it.

Is a chime better than an alarm?

Many people find a soft, rising chime easier than a harsh alarm. Make sure you can hear it, and set a backup alarm if it matters.

Why does the music fade out before the chime?

So the chime is clear and calm, and you are not woken by two sounds at once.

General information, not medical advice. If you are very tired all the time, or nap a lot and still feel awful, talk to a doctor. The nap timer is a gentle wake-up, not a safety alarm: set a backup alarm.
